On Thursday 9th June 2022, we launched ‘The Mary Costello Cup’ GAA interschools competition. We welcomed Baylin NS, Ard na Grath NS and An Grianan NS to the astro turf pitch and with the help of a few past pupils each team played a number of matches.
This competition is in memory of Mary Costello, a past principal and teacher of St. Oliver Plunkett BNS who passed away some years ago. Mary taught in St. Oliver Plunkett BNS for her whole teaching career and was a dedicated teacher and friend to the children and teachers who were lucky to work alongside her.
Her daughter Emma came to present the trophy, shield and medals to the teams along with Robbie Forde, who is a past pupil of the school and a current member of the Westmeath Senior football team.
We had a wonderful day of sport and all children thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Congratulations to Baylin who were the winners of the ‘shield’ competition with Ard na Grath the runners up.
Congratulations to our own team from St. Oliver Plunkett BNS who were victorious over An Grianan in the cup competition.
A sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this happen. Thanks especially to Moate Community School for allowing us to use the fantastic facilities.
All participants received a medal and a goodie bag and went home happy.
We hope this competition will continue to grow over the coming years in honour of the wonderful, kind and dedicated late Mary Costello.
